I was recently at a company that did a big switchover from Lync 2010 to 2013.  The new environment consisted of 3 Enterprise Edition front-end servers with an F5 load balancer taking care of web services load balancing.

On the first business day of full Lync 2013 operations, some people were complaining they could not join meetings.  When some users clicked on the Join Lync Meeting link in the email, they were greeted with a 404 - File or directory not found error in IE.  If they tried several times, eventually they got in.

Further analysis showed that one specific front-end server was serving up the 404 errors, while the others were working fine.  Thanks to the F5, we were able to easily remove that server from the load-balanced pool while we troubleshooted (troubleshot?) the problem.

The first thing to note about troubleshooting issues with the meet URL on an Enterprise Edition pool is that you can't connect directly to a specific server in a pool and expect to get the proper meeting join experience.  For example, if your meet URL is meet.contoso.com and your Lync pool members are FE01.contoso.com, FE02.contoso.com etc, you would normally connect to a meeting via something like https://meet.contoso.com/user.name/FY3DFSE4.  You can't troubleshoot issues with a specific server by connecting to https://FE01.contoso.com/user.name/FY3DFSE4.  You'll get a 404 error, thanks to the way the URL Rewrite module processes URLs.

To get around this, you need to add a temporary HOSTS entry to your testing workstation for meet.contoso.com pointing to the server having the issue. This will bypass the load balancer and allow you to connect directly to the server you want to test.

Back to the problem....

After setting my HOSTS file to point directly to the "bad" server, I found I could browse to https://meet.contoso.com successfully, but not to a specific meeting like https://meet.contoso.com/user.name/FY3DFSE4, which threw a 404.  Event logs didn't show anything wrong.

I'll spare you the hours of dead ends I tried and just give you the solution (because that's why you're here, right?)

I went to Control Panel and removed the IIS URL Rewrite Module 2.  Then I re-ran Lync setup via the Lync 2013 Deployment Wizard, which re-added the URL Rewrite Module and reset the default URL rewrite rules Lync put in place.  All this was done without reboots or service interruption.  As soon as Lync setup completed, meeting joins happened without error.

So, it appears that something went wrong with one or more of the URL rewrite rules, which wasn't cleaned up by simply re-running Lync setup, or Enable-CSComputer, which was things other people suggested in various places I looked.

I hope this helps others who are having this issue.

Last year, on October 29th, we introduced the world to a mouse, a hat and a little windy trouble brought to life by immersive storytelling technology. That was the first Spotlight Story. It was called Windy Day.

Ready for another story? It might be the same forest, but things are definitely different once the sun goes down.

Continuing our work with award-winning storytellers, Buggy Night was directed by veteran animator Mark Oftedal along with much of the Windy Day team, including Caldecott winning illustrator and writer Jon Klassen and Academy award-winning producer Karen Dufilho-Rosen.

With each Spotlight Story we’re uncovering more ground -- both technologically and creatively. We’re continuing to explore novel storytelling possibilities for mobile. Possibilities that are revealed when mobile is considered a true medium, rather than just a smaller screen. We’re finding out what happens at the intersection of hardware, software, and content.

Technologically, Buggy Night takes interactivity and immersiveness to the next level. For this story, we created seamless interactivity by leveraging Android 4.4 KitKat graphics capabilities applied to a true 360-degree environment. Creatively, this meant that we had to tell a story that unfolds where you choose to look -- and where you don’t.

Keep an eye on your Moto X and see what happens when your phone catches the latest Spotlight bug going around.

If you missed our first Spotlight Story, Windy Day, you can check it out in the new Library section of Spotlight Player. And to keep up to date on all things Spotlight Stories, follow our Tumblr or join our Google+ Community.

Its a well known fact that apart from the traditional Bluetooth way of sharing files between two mobile devices, smartphones have the added advantage of sharing content using the Wifi technology. Many apps are today available in the market to help you utilise this facility, but none can match the robustness and ease of use that Software Data Cable offers.

As its name suggests, Software Data Cable facilitates sending and recieving any kind of files between two smartphones, a smartphone and a PC as you can with a physical data cable. The only difference is that with Software Data Cable, you share wirelessly. And wait, its price couldn't be better - its free ! :D

Share files seamlessly between your smartphone and PC

With this app, sharing files wirelessly between your PC and smartphone becomes as easy as simple copy and paste. Just open up the app, tap the 'Sync PC' button and join a wifi network (or create one). Then on your PC just connect to the existing WiFi network (or the newly created one). Fire up Windows Explorer and type in the FTP address this app provides you with in the address bar. The ftp address is usually this - ftp://192.168.43.1:8888/ . Press Enter. You are ready to copy files as you normally would.

Share files at lightning fast speeds between Android smartphones

As with PC, smartphone to smartphone file sharing can also be carried out at lightning fast speeds. The speeds can also reach upto 7 mbps, which is way more than the traditional bluetooth way of data sharing between smartphones.

To share files with another smartphone, this app needs to be installed on the other phone as well as yours. Just tap "Sync Phone' option. It will prompt whether you want to create a network or join a network. Tap 'Create a direct push network'. Ask your colleague to do the same steps as above except that he/she 'Joins the Direct push Network'. Now go to the storage area and click on the files you want to share. Tap "Direct Push'. The file gets shared at amazingly fast speeds.

One user creates the direct push network while the other user Joins it

Its also possible to connect with multiple smartphone users at the same time and share one file with everyone.

So, the next time you need to share large files between your fellow colleagues, bid adieu to the old school bluetooth and say hello to Software Data Cable, the Wifi way !

Hello readers!!

We all know how irritating it is to have internet access but not be able to go on certain sites.

There a couple ways of doing this but my favourite is by opening the website via a translation website.

And it's as easy as 1,2,3...!

For this purpose we will be using Facebook as the blocked site, quite easily the most blocked website at the workplace and educational institutes. And use Google translate as our translation website; the most commonly used online translation service.

Steps :

1. Go to http://translate.google.com/
